The candidates for Ph.D. Programme may be offered admission based on certain minimum academic requirements to be satisfied by the candidates as given below:

• Engineering and Technology: Bachelors / Masters Degree in Engineering or Technology in the relevant discipline with a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in both Bachelors and Master's levels from recognized Technical Institute or University. [Minimum 6.0 CGPA or 55% marksfor SC/ST candidates]
  Only those Candidates will be considered for Ph.D. programme. Whose admission to M.Tech /M.S/ME programmes was through GATE score OR Who holds a valid GATE score (i.e. those qualified in GATE 2013 or 2014) OR
  B. Tech. with a valid GATE Score Card(i.e. those qualified in GATE 2013 or 2014).
• Humanities & Applied Sciences(Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics): Bachelor's andMaster's degree in Sciences or Humanities / M. Tech in the relevant area with a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in both Bachelor's and Master's levels from recognized Institute or University.[Minimum 6.0 CGPA or 55% marks for SC/STcandidates].
  Only those Candidates will be considered for Ph.D. programme.
  Having valid GATE score card or CSIR/NBHM/UGC-NET fellowship.
• Computer Applications:MCA with valid GATE Score or M.Tech in Engineering with a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in Master's levels from recognized Institute or University. [Minimum 6.0 CGPA or 55% marks for SC/ST candidates].
  Only those Candidates will be considered for Ph.D. programme.
  Whose admission to M.Tech / M.S / ME programmes is through GATE Score
  OR
  Who holds a valid GATE score (i.e. those qualified in GATE 2013 or 2014) Candidates having valid GATE/CSIR/NBHM/UGC-NET score will get preference.

• The people working in National research laboratories / R&D organizations having Research MOU with NIT Jamshedpur
• The people working in PSU’s / Industries having ongoing Research MOU with NIT Jamshedpur
• The Institute Faculty at NIT Jamshedpur on regular or contract basis. If a candidate is registered this category but not continue as a faculty of the Institute, he/she may be considered as full-time research scholar if he/she fulfils the qualifications and eligibility criteria or he/she may be continue as part-time scholar without any fellowship (financial support) from the Institute

Academic Qualifications

Bachelors/Masters Degree in Engineering/Technology or in the appropriate discipline with a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 65% marks from a recognized Institute or University (Minimum 5.5 CGPA or 55% marks for SC/ST candidates)

Master's Degree in Sciences/Humanities/Social Sciences/Management/Computer applications or in the appropriate discipline with a minimum 6.5 CGPA or 65% marks from a recognized Institute or University (Minimum 5.5 CGPA or 55% marks for SC/ST candidates)

Work/Research Experience

• ME / M. Tech/MS Degree with at least 3 years experience
• BE / B. Tech Degree with at least 5 years experience

• For the candidates from National Research laboratories / R&D organizations / Public Sector Units / Industries the minimum residential requirement is one semester, which is to be completed at a stretch preferably immediately after joining. During this time the candidates complete the course work requirements.
• However, in case of candidates with very good research experience (not less than 10 years or more) in National Researches Laboratories / R&D organizations /Public Sector Units / Industries with the special permission of the Doctoral Scrutiny Committee, the residential requirement may be waived completely. Nevertheless, it is mandatory for such candidates also to complete the course work for the prescribed number of credits on self-study mode, following all evaluation components as prescribed for a regular course at NIT Jamshedpur.
• For the candidates of Ph.D. under part-time, one guide from NIT Jamshedpur and one guide from the parent organization are mandatory. Hence, the candidates applying for Ph.D. under part-time must identify a suitable guide in his/her organization, take his/her written consent and must indicate the same in the application.
• The guide at the parent organization must possess Ph.D. qualification in the concerned area. In any case, the bio-data of the research guide at the parent organization must accompany the written consent given by him (Annexure-IV)
• The candidates applying for Ph.D. under part-time must ensure that adequate facilities for doing research are available at his/her organization.
• Student under this category is not entitled to any fellowship (financial support) from the Institute. They are required to produce a NOC / Sponsorship Certificate (Annexure II and III) from their employer along with relevant experience certificates on employer’s letter head (containing details like website address, phone and fax number, postal address etc.) from present / past employers.

The selection procedure for admission to Ph.D. Programme is based on consistently good academic record throughout and interview performance. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/PWD are applicable as per GOI norms.

The candidates selected for admission to Ph.D. Programme as full-time research scholar is eligible to receive institute fellowship as follows. The tenure of a research fellowship is four years only but it is based on the performance of the research work and other assignments of the Department. The full-time research scholars have to assist in teaching and laboratory work assigned by the concerned Department.

• Candidates joining with Master's Degree in Engineering / Technology or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto,
  - Rs.18,000/- per month, for the first two years
  - Rs.20,000/- per month, in the next two years
• Candidates joining with a Master's Degree in Sciences / Humanities / Social Sciences / MCA / MBA or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto,
  - Rs. 16,000/- per month, for the first two years
  - Rs. 18,000/- per month in the next two years
• Candidates joining with Bachelors Degree in Engineering / Technology or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto,
  - Rs. 16,000/- per month, for the first two years
  - Rs. 18,000/- per month in the next two years

The candidate should submit an end semester evaluation form and progress report through their research supervisors at the end of each semester. If end semester evaluation form and progress report is not received consecutively for two semesters, the registration will be cancelled.

The filled-in applications along with the necessary documents and a crossed Demand Draft for Rs. 1,000/- (Rs. 500/- in the case of SC/ST candidates) towards Registration fee, drawn in favour of the Director, National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, payable at SBI RIT Branch (Code 1882), NIT Jamshedpur and should reach to Associate Dean (Academic: PG&R), NIT Jamshedpur-831014, Jharkhand (State) on or before 08/12/2014 (Monday).

• Super scribe on the envelop "APPLICATION FOR Ph.D. ADMISSION in the Department of _________________________”
• The candidate is required to write on the reverse side of the Demand Draft his/her name and the program to which the application is being submitted
• It is advised to send the application form by Speed Post / Registered Post.
• The candidates who are employed and wish to do Ph.D. under Part-time Research Scholar (PRS) category must submit SPONSORSHIP / NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from the employer at the submission of application / time of admission, without which admission will not be possible.
• Check the following documents are attached to the application form :
  • DD with details written on its reverse side
  • Self-attested copy of SSC in support of Date of Birth
  • Self-attested copy of intermediate /(10+2) Certificate
  • Self-attested copies of Degree certificates and Mark Memos of the all qualifying examinations
  • Self-attested copy of the caste certificate (in case of SC/ST candidates)
  • For OBC candidates, self-attested copy of OBC certificate issued after 31/03/2014 as per the format given in the Annexure-I only is accepted
  • List of publications (if any)
  • Sponsorship / No Objection Certificate from the employer for PRS category as per the format given in the Annexure-II and III.

• Candidates should specify broad areas of research in the application form
• Institute reserves the right to reject the applications for which faculty is not available/not eligible for guidance
• Incomplete application forms and forms submitted after the last date will be rejected. Institute will not be responsible for any postal delay
• Canvassing in any form will disqualify the candidates
• List of short-listed candidates for the interview will be uploaded on Institute website only
• The candidates are required to see our website for fee structure/faculty expertise etc. and also advised to visit our website regularly for update information about the admission to Ph.D. programme for the Spring Semester 2014-15.
• At present, Hostel Accommodation is NOT available for the full-time research scholars.
• No separate interview letter / communication will be made to any individual
• All candidates selected for admission shall be required to deposit the Institute fee at the time of admission
